Get a phone script to lower your insurance and broadband bills

Insurance and internet prices creep up at renewal, and calling to haggle feels awkward if you don't know what to say.

What the agent did

Karen Simpson, a mum of two in Scotland, got a home insurance renewal quote of £517 a year, up from the £360 she had been paying. A price comparison site didn't turn up anything cheaper, so she told ChatGPT how much the price had jumped and asked how to bring it down. It suggested changing parts of the quote such as the excess, going back to her current insurer to bargain, and gave her the words to use on the phone. She switched to a new insurer at £327 a year. She says the same approach cut £100 off each of the two family car policies, and her broadband dropped from £50 to £24.99 a month. She made the calls herself.

What the owner still checks

Before you agree to a cheaper insurance quote, check what changed. A higher excess or deductible means you pay more if you ever make a claim. Get the new price in writing, and never share your account password with an AI tool.

Read every field of a government form before it is submitted, and keep a copy of what was sent.

My [home insurance / car insurance / internet] renewal just went from [old price] to [new price] with [company]. I've been a customer for [years]. Comparison sites show [what you found, or 'nothing cheaper']. 1) List the parts of my plan I could change to lower the price, and what I'd give up for each. 2) Write a short, polite phone script (under a minute to read) asking them to match or beat my old price, with two follow-up lines if they say no, including asking for the cancellations or retention team. 3) Give me a one-line note to fill in after the call: who I spoke to, the new price, and the start date. Don't ask for my account number or login. I'll make the call myself.
